Sibelius-Hall

Lahti, Finnland

The most beautiful concert hall in all Scandinavia

With its concert hall, constructed mainly from wood, the Finnish city of Lahti has caused a considerable stir in the world of architecture. The many structural possibilities of this naturally occurring building material are impressively presented, like works of art, behind glass façades that show off both the protective and aesthetic aspects of glass. With its very marked temperature differences between day and night and between the seasons, the Finnish location makes particularly exacting demands on the climatic qualities of the glazing.

Conventional solar-control glass types might have reduced the penetration of solar radiation but only by sacrificing light transmittance. The type chosen for this project, was, the high-tech solar-control glass "ipasol natura", made by Interpane. This combines a low total solar energy transmittance (g value) with a high light transmittance. This is achieved by means of the wafer-thin functional coating selectively filtering outher solar energy.

All this is combined with outstanding thermal insulation, with a Ug-value for the glass itself of only 1.2 W/m²K (according EN 673). Around 4,000 square meters of solar-control glazing with a glass thickness of only 26 millimeters (6/16/4) protect the interior against the icy temperatures of the winter months.
